'once only' error mesage every login

hi all
Someone i know is having an error where every time they log in they get 
a message along these lines (they weren't very explicit):
"There were obsolete items on your gnome panel which have been removed. 
This message will not be shown again"
Thing is, they get the error every time they log in.
Its likely a result of carrying forward homes from the old server, which 
was debian sarge. should i simply blow away their .gnome* directories, 
or is there another way?
