Spot the RedHat refugee - neither Debian nor Ubuntu work like that. Both
start up in runlevel two, and runlevel three is (by default) exactly the
same. To prevent the display manager starting you should either remove
the links from /etc/rc2.d/ or change the contents of
/etc/X11/default-display-manager.
