Maildir works very well! I download mail including mail  lists like 
Ubuntu with fetchmail, and then access them with thunderbird (imap 
protocol using dovecot on my server - no reason it wouldn't work 
locally). I checked my archive folder for Ubuntu for 2005, over 48000 
messages and the screen refreshed in less than 6 secs a message selected 
at random from the window opened in another 4 secs.

evolution creates more indexes than thunderbird and works even faster.
