I had the same problem, though I am using Ubuntu, not Kubuntu, 
Dapper.

On the advice of someone on this list, I *disabled* the wireless 
network connection in System -> Admin -> Networking. After that, 
  both the wired and wireless networks showed up in the menu 
displayed from the Network Manager icon.
