Log out from Gnome/Kde/whatever.  At the login screen press 
CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to reload X.

Or

Log out from Gnome/Kde/whatever.  Press CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to console 
#1.  Login and run:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart; exit

Or

Do the MS Windows method, reboot.


I think the first method is the easiest.
