When I clicked "Play feature" on the DVD's menu, an error message
appears and the DVD window closed, leaving only a small window
with the xine logo in it (and the controls window).

The xine log viewer showed on the messages page:

xine: found demuxer plugin: Elementary MPEG stream demux plugin
xine: found input plugin : file input plugin
video_out: throwing away image ... because it's too old
    [several lines like that]
audio_decoder: error, unknown buffer type: 01060000
    [several lines like that]
    [more video_out and audio_decoder lines]
200 frames delivered, 72 frames skipped, 6 frames discarded
[lots more of these 3 types of lines, with varying numbers]

On the plugin page, it has:

load_plugins: plugin
/usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.1/xineplug_decode_mad.so found
[lots more similar lines with other names found]

The last line of that log says:

load_plugins: skipping unreadable plugin directory
/home/jeanweber/.xine/plugins.

Hmmm! That sounds like a clue.

Cheers, Jean
