Hi Jeremy,

I can't speak for a lot of data points, but I have been real happy with the
script from EasyUbuntu:

http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/

It will give you a GUI setup window to add the proprietary file formats that
you want.

Sound Juicer seems like a good app., although I have gotten used to GRIP:

http://kimbriggs.com/computers/computer-hardware/cowon-iaudio-x5-linux.file
(I use ogg, but you can choose another format to rip to).
