This might not be down to Thunderbird.  A Freeserve account I had used 
to do that, and not just with Thunderbird.  It seemed to need a kick up 
the arse to get it going sometimes.  Freeserve always denied any problem 
at their end, but after complaining it wouldn't happen again for a while·
