DVD drive disapears when linux-restricted-modules is installed

Hello,
Just bought a new Toshiba Satelite A105-4024 laptop. It works great.
After doing a fresh install I noticed that neither the dual core cpu
nor the DVD drive were recognized. I knew that installing the 686
kernel fixes the smp problem so I decided to fix that first. After
installing the kernel and rebooting, a number of hardware problems
emerged - the wifi stopped working and the video switched didn't work
right. Interestingly, the DVD drive was recognized and able to read
disks (don't know about burning though). So, I rebooted back with the
386 kernel and poked around. I realized that there was a
linux-restricted-modules 386 package installed but the corresponding
686 package hadn't been installed. I installed it, rebooted and voila,
the SMP worked, the video worked and the wifi worked.
Unfortunately the DVD drive stopped working.
Going to Computer --> CD-ROM 1 in Nautilus I get a pop-up message that
says, "Unable tgo mount the selected volume." Clicking more details
says, "mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist"
Here is the (hopefully) relevent data from dmesg:
