If I got this right, in Gmail's web interface you can:

- have a maximum of 20 FILTERs (ways to process incoming mail).

- have an unlimited number of LABELs (virtual folders to archive mail)

You can cook up a filter to automatically assign a label depending on
sender, for instance. I have one filter which auto-puts all stuff from
this list in its particular folder without cluttering the inbox.

You can have multiple labels for each email (actually for each "mail
thread" with same subject).

And you can also have a mix of _auto_ and _manual_ labels to better
organize stuff.

Any one with doubts please mail me off-list, I'll be glad to explain
further if possible.
