Thanks for the suggestion. Didn't work here - just caused X to lock up.
I'm using the framebuffer (vga=791 in menu.lst), and seem to remember
reading somewhere that the Nvida drivers don't like it. I'll try
disabling it and see if that helps (though I don't want ot lose the fb
support..).
I don't see any Nvidia logo during boot - never tried anything other
than the nv driver, so I'm not sure what to expect.
