i suggest you install the following:

Obligatory disclaimer: This package may be illegal in your jurisdiction
owing to idiotic laws. If so, I fully encourage civil disobedience ;-)
Explanation: Your dvd may be encumbered with so-called "Digital Rights
Management" This package circumvents the code involved.
This may not be the problem, but if it is, the package linked should fix
it. It will, in any case, enable you to play DVDs that have such
restrictions.
