its not allowed by default and definitely not recommended but easily
overcome.
sudo passwd root
-enter your passwd then new root one

sudo vi /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
-search down to AllowRoot, change from false to true, restart X or
reboot

as a side note what exactly are you having problems doing as a standard
user? as there is probably a better solution than using a root login.
