vmplayer kernel modules compile error

I have been trying to compile the vmplayer kernel source and every time I get this error.

dh_testdir: cannot read debian/control: No such file or directory

There isn't a file called control but there are control.modules.in  Is the file named wrong or am I missing another file called control.
