vi is the standard editor on unix (well, I know, ed is the standard
editor...). It's incredible powerful (especially if you're fast in
typing and using a US keyboard layout) but its user interface isn't
exactly intuitive (some people say it has two modes: one that beeps and
one that destroys your file).

But of course Emacs is a much better editor. Don't waste your time with
vim! Emacs is the only editor that has a builtin desktop environment and
pychotherapist and can make coffee.

vim stands for "vi improved" and is the most popular of today's vi
clones.

vim has a good online tutorial: start vim and press F1 or type :help
