I have same problems. gnome-system-monitor reports that gnome-panel uses 300MB of X memory. Same happens with xfce4-panel... And that's after 6 hours. And mem usage is slowly increasing. On Xfce4 I even had it use up all my mem (256MB) and swap (588MB). -- InternetNightmare
