I am not using a USB hub. My laptop has two USB ports, I am plugging it
in directly into one of them. (I have tried either one, and it doesn't
make a difference).

Yes, that seems to be the exact problem. I hope I don't have to
recompile the kernel myself..gulp.

Would it be helpful for me to post a "me too" message in the bug and put
a copy of my log? I don't know if I would be adding new information to
help solve the problem or just clutter the whole thing.
