Change in Dapper init scripts breaks bootup on custom kernel

Hi,
I have a problem trying to boot some custom kernel on Dapper
(kernel.org vanilla 2.6.15.3 patched with vservers vs2.0.1.2) that
used to work fine on Breezy. At the end of the boot process, there is
a long freeze and then I get the following in the logs:
./auth.log:137:Jun 14 07:08:07 lara getty[1181]: /dev/tty1: not a
character device
./auth.log:138:Jun 14 07:08:07 lara getty[1182]: /dev/tty3: not a
character device
./auth.log:139:Jun 14 07:08:07 lara getty[1183]: /dev/tty4: not a
character device
./auth.log:140:Jun 14 07:08:07 lara getty[1184]: /dev/tty6: not a
character device
./auth.log:141:Jun 14 07:08:07 lara getty[1185]: /dev/tty5: not a
character device
./auth.log:142:Jun 14 07:08:07 lara getty[1186]: /dev/tty2: not a
character device
./daemon.log:10:Jun 14 07:08:17 lara init: Id "1" respawning too fast:
disabled for 5 minutes
./daemon.log:11:Jun 14 07:08:17 lara init: Id "3" respawning too fast:
disabled for 5 minutes
./daemon.log:12:Jun 14 07:08:17 lara init: Id "4" respawning too fast:
disabled for 5 minutes
./daemon.log:13:Jun 14 07:08:17 lara init: Id "5" respawning too fast:
disabled for 5 minutes
./daemon.log:14:Jun 14 07:08:17 lara init: Id "6" respawning too fast:
disabled for 5 minutes
./daemon.log:15:Jun 14 07:08:17 lara init: Id "2" respawning too fast:
disabled for 5 minutes
Couple notes:
a) this problem occurs on multiple machines, multiple architectures,
with that round of my custom (server) kernels
b) booting on all those machines works fine using official kernels in
Dapper, or, on at least one of the machines, with another custom
kernel (suspend2 patch)
c) **this 2.6.15.3-vs2.0.1.2 custom kernel works fine in Breezy on
several machines**
=> something must have been added in Dapper init scripts that breaks
it. What, I'm trying to find out. Understandably, I need to actually
solve the problem, as opposed to just using official kernel etc
(patches required).
I attach the kernel config. If you have a hint of what driver I could
be missing or what part of the init scripts is causing the problem,
please reply directly as I'm not subscribed.
