Well, there you go. I noticed

 /etc/mkinitramfs/conf.d/resume

and a few other files specified /dev/hda3. I tried changing that to
/dev/mapper/chunk-swap, and I still got the usual 'can't find swap' error.

Then I gave up and went back to actually using /dev/hda3 for swap, rebooted
and hibernate works.

So it looks like you can't hibernate to swap on LVM.
