experiences with RAID 6

I'm sure the performance difference between hardware and software raid is
marginal now, since we have dual core processors working in pairs and so on.

My off site backup solution was to create a raid5 set that used rsync to
mirror any changes every 24 hours. I think its a good idea but quite
expensive to have 2 raid arrays in 2 locations. I'm considering a RAID 6 +1
(if that is possible) array but Ive never made that with 6 -8 TB before, so
im lacking the hours required to do so.
