Mail Notification to Play Sound

You can configure kmail to notify you with a pop-up window or a sound 
whenever new mail arrives. But, of course, it would need to be running. 
There are other programs, smaller than kmail, that will stay on your 
task bar and notify you when new mail arrive. The original one is called 
biff, and its variants all have names derived from it. For example, 
there's a program called kbiff for kde, and another one called xbiff 
that will run under kde (I'm sure) or gnome (I believe).

Any of these programs, of course, would need to be running in order to 
detect new mail.
