Thank you, Caldevil.  I have mplayer plugin installed but it is never 
invoked for .mov files.  In fact, in Download Actions, mplayerplug-in 
only appears for the AU extension.  As I stated in my original post, 
clicking on a .mov file in Firefox causes the following error message:

The xine engine failed to start.
No demuxer found - stream format not recognised.
