I can see from that log that the new kernel isn't detecting the second 
ide drive. From the working kernel I can see they are on the same IDE 
channel. Odd.

Is there anything unusual about that second disk - anything at all? 
Like maybe it has a BSD partition table on it and you didn't compile 
in support...

Perhaps you should post here a diff -u between the old and new kernel 
configs
