Thanks for the help. No, no firewalls. I just tried again booting the 
client from a Dapper Live CD (which doesn't have a firewall for sure, 
right?). No change (same error on the client, same log on the server). 
Likewise, a default Edubuntu setup doesn't come with a firewall either.
