Update on the current situation: I finally got Money 2004 working under
Ubuntu dapper, and here is how:
- Installed wine from the Ubuntu standard repository (Universe or
Multiverse, don't know which).
- Installed Crossover office (by downloading an .sh executable from the
website).
- Used Crossover to install IE6 (it is supported software).
- Used Crossover to install Money 2004 (unsupported software) in the
same wine bottle, with the following snags:
- Money 2004 Installer prompted for reboot mid-install. Crossover
simulates reboot but then installer doesn't continue. Fixed this by
editing the system.reg file in the Crossover bottle and removing the
"RunOnce..." line that points to the Money install. Don't remember the
specifics, but if you use a text editor to find "RunOnce" it should be
fairly obvious which line I am referring to.
- Reinstalled Money on same bottle. This time the installer did finish.
That's it, Money works. I specifically avoided using the Money feature
to update itself from the Internet because it wrecked a previously
working installation.
Money 2004 works like this:
- Stuff that works:
- Account registers and transactions
- Portfolio view
- On line banking
- Transaction downloading
- Security price updating
- Regular file operations (open, close, backup)
Stuff that doesn't:
- Reports (screen goes black or almost black and is not usable)
- On line updater (broke my install once, haven't tried again).
As a suggestion, I would recommend that anyone trying to do a similar
task, use the Crossover bottle archive function after every step, so you
can go back to a previous step if something breaks without having to
start over (especially the IE6 install which involves downloading 13-20
Mbs).
I am still not happy of not being able to completely let go of Windows,
and I would love a Linux alternative to Money that is open source or at
least (well) supported, but for the time being, it looks like this is
the best I could get.
Thanks to everyone for their help,
