Detecting ethernet card.

Ok, I got it working but I don't really understand what I did. I edited 
/etc/network/interfaces and added a configuration for eth1:

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

Then ran 'ifup eth1' and then it worked.

Question: Does this mean that 'ifup' does hardware detection? If you 
just add an entry in /etc/network/interfaces then 'ifup' will also try 
to detect the hardware?

I'd really like to understand how this works better.
