Looking for updae notifier for system tray (when not using gnome)

Folks,

I'm using Openbox as my window manager, but I do miss the
software-update indicator in the system tray when using gnome. Is that
colorful ball a gnome applet only? Or is there something I can add to
a .xinitrc file to have it activate with Openbox (with pypanel as the
icon bar)?
