things go more smoothly there? I've found several times that problems
were caused because of old settings conflicting with new problems.

Problem is, to diagnose this you'd have to remove practically all your
.gnome hierarchy and start readding the folders until you find the
culprit. That assuming that only one app is the problem, and not a few
of them conflicting with each other.

I usually erase old settings, configure things again and start fresh.
