Failed to open secondary USB sound device

I use a laptop with a secondary USB sound device connected to. With
Breezy the secondary sound device works without any problem. I upgraded
to Dapper and am not able to use it anymore. For instance when using
XMMS which is configured to use the secondary sound device the message
"** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Failed to open pcm device (hw:1,0): Device
or resource busy" appears. I was not able to get any media player
working with it. Also to run the application as root doesn't helped.
Alsamixer recognizes the device properly. Any ideas?
