X locks up the keyboard

Hi,
Just did a fresh install of ubuntu 6.06 (Asus mobo, nvidia onboard
graphics, AMD Athlon XP). Kudos to developers everything,
went smoothly. Installed the nvidia-glx module and enabled the nvidia
driver rather than the free nv driver. 3D acceleration works.
One problem that I noticed: When I log out and X tries to restart, the
screen gets muddled and the keyboard locks up. Only way to get back is
by pressing the reset button :-(
The machine has not hung (I suppose) as I could see the hard disk
activity and network activity (I was downloading some pacakges).
Searching the archives showed people facing similar probles with no
solution. On the same machine (diffrent hard disk), I have flight-6
installed which works without any problems. Has something changed
between the two releases which is causing this odd behaviour?
Can somebody give some pointers to solve this problem?
Regards,

The lines are all busy (busied out, that is -- why let them in to begin with?).
