how to debug broken hibernate?

Then lets make sure the button is configured correctly. Just in case you 
haven't seen this before:
gconf-editor -> apps -> gnome-power-management. Make sure that "Can 
Hibernate" is checked, and that action-button-hibernate is set to 
hibernate. If it isn't, right click on it and choose "edit key."
