Look at other threads on this topic. In 6.06 (Dapper), the default
kernel supports SMP, and the linux-686-smp metapackage depends only on
the default kernel (which probably is the case to support people
upgrading from 5.10)
*** aptitude show linux-686-smp
Depends: linux-image-686, linux-restricted-modules-686
Description: (...) Pentium IV with SMP support.
*** aptitude show linux-image-686
Depends: linux-image-2.6.15-23-686
*** aptitude show linux-image-2.6.15-23-686
Description: Linux kernel image for version 2.6.15 on
PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/PIV SMP/UP

This package contains the Linux kernel image for version 2.6.15 on
Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium III/Pentium IV with SMP support
