As Jack Wasey said in another reply in this thread: it is caused because
you did not compile initrd into the kernel and didn't install the initrd
image.

Read the docs in the link Jack gave. This one [1] would help with your
current problem, but if you want to go around compiling vanilla kernels,
you should read the others too :) This isn't 2000 anymore, the kernel
development model has changed and the distros have become more
sophisticated in their setups.
