Gnome low screen resolution (just 640x480)

I have installed Ubuntu on a Thinkpad A31p with Ubuntu 5.10 and 6.06
since flight 4 and have no problems with the internal display
(1600x1200). Here is my xorg.conf file:

In Display-Settings I can select from 14 different resolutions.
(640x480 ... 1600x1200)



Sometimes I have timing problems with beamers on the external port. 

The bottom 2cm of the desktop get cut off on the external display.
