Rebooting ( Screen goes funny white shade ) and hangs ???

Here a VERY Odd one:
Why does on rebooting a virgin 6.06 install, the screen
turn to a blank off white shade color with lines, and then hangs???
you can't see any text, nothing at all.

have to hard reboot?
