Dapper chokes on printing graphics

Ubuntu Users,

I'm using Dapper 6.06 LTS. I installed CUPS, the Gnome printer manager,
and the necessary drivers for my Canon USB printer.

Then I tried to print a test page. I was thrilled to see it start
printing. And then depressed to see it stop printing... half way through
the page.

I waited to see if eventually the page would finish, but after a quarter
of an hour I figured it had stalled. So I reset the printer, turned it
off and on and waited a bit, then tried another test page. It halted in
the exact same place. Just a little less than exactly half way.

I tried printing in other applications. From Thunderbird I could print
an email, and from OpenOffice I could print at a page of text.

From PDF Viewer and XPDF I could not print anything. With FireFox, I
tried printing a page that had some images on it, and it choked half way
through the first page.

My amateur guess as to what the difference with these things is that
things that are just text seem to print, graphics seem to choke. But I
don't have any good idea about what would be the reason why graphics
would choke. Is it the size? The use of the colour ink?

Am I missing some obvious package or driver or something that
facilitates graphics?
