Sound problems on AMD64

On the following chipset:

Config options: 0

Installed drivers:

Card config:
HDA NVidia at 0xfead8000 irq 209

Audio devices:
0: ALC880 Analog (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: Realtek ALC880

I can play music using xfmedia or xmms, but I cannot record anything
although the microphone is working.

Starting audacity with 'aoss audacity' helps that audacity does not
complain on startup.  However when I try to record using audacity, it
complains about "error opening device".

Also "saytime" just produces output on the screen without an error
message but nou output through the speakers.

Ekiga's sound is unusable.

Any help would be appreciated.
