Not sure if this will help you, but it puzzled me for a bit, and this
worked.  I'm running a Davicom nic and couldn't get out past myself on a
fresh install of Dapper.  After a few hours of no replies from anyone,
and alot of searching, I found this in the archives.

sudo rmmod tulip
sudo ifdown eth0
sudo rmmod dmfe
sudo modprobe dmfe
sudo ifup eth0
