laptop install 6.06

Everything seems to be fine on my laptop running 6.06 except...
even after apt-get update/apt-get upgrade, the upgrade manager doesn't
appear when upgrades are available.

This morning I ran apt-get update/apt-get -s upgrade, and found 5
upgrades available, yet the upgrade manager didn't appear.
However, about 2 or 3 minutes _after_ I run the apt-get -s upgrade, the
notifier dialog does come up.

Do I need to write a crontab entry to check this for myself with Dapper?
