problem during upgrading

well
it looked like the file in question
/var/lib/dpkg/available
wound up to be corrupted. thankfully i found an available-backup in the
same directory.
i restored the file
and ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade
and everything was tip-top
hope this helps some one
and i guess i have another file to add to back ups
