Multisync and Palm Zire 71

I've been trying to get Multisync to work between my Palm Zire 71
(connected via USB) and Evolution under Dapper without much success.
One of the problem seems to be that the device /dev/pilot does not exist
until I press the hot-sync button on the Palm cradle. Whenever Multisync
needs to talk to the Palm it expects the user to click on a button in
Multisync and then prompts the user to hit the hot-sync button on the
Palm. Problem is, as the device does not exist, Multisync fails (it
either exits or just does nothing). If I press the hotsync button first,
Multisync then prompts for me to press the hot sync button!
Documentation on Multisync seems almost non-existent and there seems to
be several postings about synchronising not working correctly, but I've
not found anything relating to this problem. Has anybody got this to
work and if so, what did you do to make it work?
Regards,
Tony.
