Hi there,

You don't use the RPM, that is a different type of package manager.
You install multiverse:
https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/extra-repositories.html
Then install java.
https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/synaptic.html
For your modem there is this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/hardware.html#modems
