installing in text mode

8MB should be good enough, I installed Ubuntu (was Breezy back then) with a 10+ year old Matrox Millenium II video card, which I think has 4MB of RAM, and it all worked perfectly...

If you want to the text installer anyway (as I do), just go download the "Alternate" CD (toward the bottom of the page) :
