Surely not, but admittedly this is how people sometimes feel

-ok, if you take your "other OS" to begin with, how exactly is
your network setup in XP?
Most probably you will use dhcp, but let's
try to be sure.
-Now, what exactly is the ip adress of your gateway device?
-Back to Ubuntu, what is the output of the command 'sudo
ifconfig'
(this means something like "show me the configuration of the
network interfaces that are configured within my computer".)
