What starts network manager?

Thanks. I could not kill nm-applet, or rather,it wouldn't stay dead!
Whatever was starting it was restarting it too. Also, nm-applet was not
to be found in the available applets, I started it manually, from the
command line.

Regarding my other questions, can I somehow get network manager to NOT
set up it's own resolver? That seems completely unrelated to its
function, anyway.
