Are you using the latest Skype beta (that supports ALSA)? If so, 
configure Skype to use your USB mic. You can discover which parameter to 
tell Skype by checking the output from ``cat /proc/asound/cards''.

Here's a quick example:

crimsun at garnish:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
  0 [ICH6           ]: ICH4 - Intel ICH6
                       Intel ICH6 with AD1981B at 0xa0040800, irq 50
  1 [USB            ]: USB-Audio - Transit USB
                       M-Audio Transit USB at usb-0000:00:1d.7-4.3, full 
speed

If I want to use the Transit, I'll tell Skype to use hw:1 .
