Several possibilities :

There are two set of nvidia drivers depending of the age/geforce chipset
version you use.

Legacy Nvidia for card up to Geforce3 / Geforce4

Nvidia for more recent GPU Geforce4.

Using the wrong driver set may lead to non working to working badly.

what tells: lspci | grep -i nvidia

Then, black lines can be caused by screen rates over RAMDAC and video
memory bandwidth capacity. (resolution or refresh rate too high).

You could try adjusting screen refresh rate to the lower your monitor
can displays. If that suppress the black lines, then up the refresh rate
and resolution to the better that work ok.

Typically, laptop embeded nvidia GPU and memory are of lower specs than
desktop AGP/PCIe addon cards.

Choosing the right driver between legacy Nvidia and Nvidia may let it
set up the GPU according the its working specs.
