I had this problem on the alternative install to my PC when I did my
first ubantu install. Then I decided to try it out on an old PIII Dell
laptop, as a desktp install, and this happened to me as well - I went
through the install twice, and carefully checked what happened the
second time.
You are asked for a password, but no username.
When I got to the login, the password would not work either for 'oem'
nor root.
I selected a reboot, and when it came up I went into recovery-mode.
In recovery-mode I was logged in as root, and from there I could add a
new user, assign a password, and change the oem user's password to what
I had intended.
Then, typing exit, the system came up, and I could log straight into
ubantu as 'oem' with the new password, under what looks like the gome
desktop. No further configuration dialogues came up, however.
