I have recently bought my first AMD-64bit Athlon. I used a
breezy-server-install-cd to do my installation just because there was
one in the office. I have then upgraded to Dapper through the network.
After installing the Dapper 2.6.15 kernel and rebooting, I could not
boot - the same symptoms as you had above.

I then wrote a Dapper live-dvd and that would also not boot on this
machine. I have tried a lot of different options like compiling my own
2.6.15 kernel from the Ubuntu-sources and in the end I had success using
a Debian 2.6.16-2 kernel.

I could al the way boot the breezy kernel, but not any of the 2.6.15
kernels from Dapper.
