start by finding out what file system it is formatted with, then make
sure that both linux and windows are set to show hidden files - see what
you find.
if they were deleted from windows find out where files are put when
deleted from portable media. If they were deleted from linux they should
be in user.Trash. System recovery disk has some good tools for
recreating deleted files.
